Message to Parents - Nov. 7, 2013

Earl J. Ball III, Chair, Board of Trustees

We can't thank you enough for your support during this difficult week. We hope that our communication with you has begun to provide support and guidance as we move forward as a community. We are grateful to all of you who have reached out to the school for support and advice, as well as those who have had questions or suggestions.

Our actions at this point have been solely focused on assisting our own community to process and respond to these events. But we also wish to express our deepest sympathy for any of the victims of these repugnant and reprehensible allegations. As educators, parents and human beings, our sorrow extends to any child, anywhere, who has been victimized.

The media coverage last Saturday was upsetting. Understandably there were concerns and frustrations as to why the media, and not Tower Hill, provided details regarding the allegations. Our attorney has been in regular communication with the authorities and previously requested copies of the affidavits that were the subject of last Saturday’s article. The affidavits were filed under seal, however, and could not be released. After the media reports surfaced, we learned that the affidavits had been disclosed to the media by mistake and that the authorities also were surprised at their release.

We want to make sure you are aware of Dr. Wheeler’s court hearing scheduled for Friday, November 8 at 8:30 a.m. A representative of our school's legal team will be attending this hearing. It is our understanding that previously unsealed documents may be opened on Friday. Should additional information be divulged during that process, we will share an update with you tomorrow. In addition, our understanding is that Dr. Wheeler will request a reduction in his bail. We have been assured that a condition of any bail will be that Dr. Wheeler stay away from the school and have no contact with children. It is difficult to predict what may happen in regard to his bail, but we will let you know what we learn on Friday, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our children and the security of our campus.

In addition, we understand there may be a story in the local media tomorrow. Unfortunately, we do not have details to share with you at this time.

We have begun an internal investigation, which is limited at this time at the request of law enforcement because of their own investigation. We will continue to move forward as permitted in cooperation with the authorities.

We would like to remind you of the school community gatherings next week. You will have the opportunity to interact in person with the Board, the administration and our wonderful psychological support staff, Fran Henkel and Dr. Amy Cuddy. Please register on TowerNet: login > Resource Board > Updates from Tower Hill. On the webpage you will also find resources and information from our school to assist our parents during this confusing time for our community.

Finally, I want you to know that we treasure your children that you have entrusted to us, and their protection, health and happiness are the most important elements of the education we provide them. We hold your trust in us as paramount to our community and to our values.

Sincerely,
