Message to the Tower Hill Community Dec. 9, 2013

Harry Baetjer, Acting Head of School
As you know, we advised the Tower Hill community recently that there were going to be developments in Dr. Wheeler’s criminal case this week. The hearing today was closed to the public, and Dr. Wheeler did not appear in court. A grand jury handed down an indictment of Dr. Wheeler on 25 counts of dealing in child pornography. These are the same charges on which Dr. Wheeler was arrested last month. All of the charges relate to the images found on his computers that were seized by the police during their search of his residence on October 22.

Our attorney has been in regular contact with the authorities throughout the case. After today’s indictment, Dr. Wheeler’s arraignment--when he will enter a plea to the charges--must take place within ten days of the indictment date, or by December 20. Dr. Wheeler has the option to enter a plea without appearing in court, but we do not know at this time whether he will do so or whether there will be a hearing. In either situation, you can expect to see information in the media regarding the case.

There are numerous scenarios that could happen, and it is not prudent, at this point, to detail the different hypothetical situations. Of course, we cannot speculate on any outcomes at this time. As soon as we have more definitive information as to the next court proceeding, we will let you know.

Sincerely,

Harry Baetjer
Acting Head of School
