Message to the Tower Hill Community December 13, 2013

Harry Baetjer, Acting Head of School

We wrote to you just over two weeks ago about our commitment to children not only at Tower Hill but also in the broader community. I wanted to update you on several developments.

As you know, parent Tom Schorn had reached out to our community with an invitation to help raise $50,000 for Darkness to Light, the parent organization for Stewards of Children. This program, aimed at preventing child abuse through awareness and education, will be a resource for Tower Hill in the new year. Tom was so committed to making a difference that he generously offered to match up to $10,000 in donations. Together with Tom, we thank all of you who contacted him and contributed in support of this cause.

Tom and Karol’s generosity also inspired another Tower Hill graduate and current parent to agree to match an additional $10,000 in contributions to Darkness to Light. With this gift, we're closer to achieving Tom’s original goal and making a significant contribution to support the positive work of this organization. In this season of giving, I encourage you to seriously consider a donation of any size to this effort.

Should you wish to donate to Darkness to Light and take advantage of the matching funds available, please make your check payable to Darkness to Light and mail to Tom Schorn, 1398 Wilmington Pike, West Chester, PA 19382. Or you may also mail your contribution to Tower Hill School, Attention: Darkness to Light.

Even our students have been engaged with projects that will make a difference for children. The Middle School and Upper School are collecting gifts and funds for the Stocking Project, which is an initiative we have sponsored in the past to support Urban Promise and the Serviam Girls Academy. The Lower School is collecting toys for the Delaware Department of Justice to distribute to children in foster care.

Looking beyond the holiday season and into the future, our faculty and administration have explored ways to support child advocacy. Hillers' Hearts, named by a group of students this week, will be a school-wide initiative to assist programs in our community that promote the wellbeing of children. The kickoff event will be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, and will include the active involvement of our students, parents, faculty and staff. We are excited about this inaugural event, so look for additional details soon on how you can contribute to our efforts.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of our commitment to children. We are especially appreciative of Tom Schorn's initiative and our anonymous donor's remarkable additional financial support.

Sincerely,

Harry Baetjer
Acting Head of School
