I am so very impressed with the project, what the children accomplished, and that this special flag could be flown in Antarctica! Congratulations to Mrs. Martinez and her class. Our grandson, Patrick, is in the class, and I'm sure this will be an experience he will treasure his entire life. Thanks!

Second Grade Flag Flies Over Antarctica

A very industrious and enthusiastic group of second graders have gone penguin crazy...

Mrs. Martinez's reading group of eleven students made a flag and sent it to Antarctica. Over break, the flag flew at the Cape Royds Penguin colony on Ross Island, Antarctica! Our scientist contact, Jean Pennycook, reports "We LOVED, I mean LOVED your flag, truly this one was spectacular. Each student was so creative and special in their artwork. I loved the cowboy penguin, others enjoyed the pink bow penguin. Was the green penguin meant to be a Martian? This one made us smile."

The children have been studying penguins for the last month and have been working with an amazing website called www.penguinscience.com. This website supports education and is maintained by a group of scientists that research and track penguins and climate change in Antarctica. The scientists use the flag to measure wind speed and to brighten up their lonely hut near the Adelie Penguin breeding colony. This is the fifth year that Tower Hill second graders have participated in this project.
