Leslie Sysko Named English Department Chair

Headmaster Chris Wheeler has appointed Leslie Sysko as the chair of the English Department, replacing Hugh Atkins who will retire at the end of this school year.

Leslie is a graduate of The Lawrenceville School and Lafayette College. Her academic preparation and success at Lafayette, where she earned her B.A. in English and graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, was capped by the Gilbert Prize in English as well as the H. MacKnight Black Poetry Prize, and the Jean Corrie Prize in Poetry upon graduation. She earned her M.F.A in Poetry at New England College in 2006. Since then, she has published articles and poetry in Ploughshares, Rattle, and New York Quarterly, among other publications. Her poetry has been recognized with Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Prizes three times, and in 2010 she was a recipient of a Delaware Division of the Arts Emerging Artist Fellowship.

Leslie began her teaching career at Wilmington Friends School for two years and has been at Tower Hill since 2008. Like the other members of the English Department, Leslie has taught all four grade levels in the Upper School. This includes designing her own courses ("New York, New York!" and "The Fire & the Frying Pan") as well as teaching everything from Shakespeare, to Modern American Poetry, 9th and 10th grade English, and Creative Writing. Leslie has also been involved outside of the classroom as the faculty advisor to the new online "newspaper" The Rubble (therubble.org), as well as serving as a member of the Student Faculty Council. The Admission Committee, Faculty Council, Curriculum Mapping Committee and the Faculty Fund to Aid Students have also been the beneficiaries of Leslie's efforts during her tenure.

Dr. Wheeler is excited to be able to appoint someone from inside the school to this position, and he looks forward to the enthusiasm and the thoughtful new ideas that Leslie will bring to the already excellent English Department of Tower Hill.
