Upper School Students Receive Jefferson Awards

Jake Simon, Rachel League, Sara Hobbs and Luke Eppley were selected as monthly Jefferson Awards winners.
December Jefferson Award winner, Jake Simon, has contributed over 94 hours of service to the Center for the Creative Arts. The junior spent time with many children of all ages teaching art and assisting the staff with lessons and other tasks. The staff at the CCA has emphatically requested that he come back to help them with their camps again.

January’s Jefferson Award winner, senior Sara Hobbs, was a summer intern as a camp counselor at the Brandywine Zoo. She devoted over 126 hours of service supervising campers and engaging them in activities. She was able to prepare her own lesson and teach the campers about the animals under the sea. The staff at the Brandywine Zoo states that “Sara was an enjoyable addition to our summer team!”

February’s Jefferson Award winner is junior Rachel League. Rachel has volunteered for several organizations and contributed in a variety of ways. She has helped to implement a garden plan and helped harvest and deliver over 200 pounds of vegetables for the Chester County Food Bank. She also volunteered at the Center for Creative Arts as a camp counselor assisting students with activities and the staff with various duties. All of her volunteer efforts combined tally up to over 120 hours of service!

Senior Luke Eppley, the Jefferson Award winner for March, has devoted over 100 hours of service assisting low- income families with much-needed home repairs and renovations with the Appalachain Service Project. The goal of this organization is to decrease the substandard housing in the rural areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Keith Heitz of the Appalachain Service Project commented about the senior, ”Luke has shown a tremendous amount of interest in serving others through our organization. He serves with a true vested interest and high level of responsibility; he has always and continues to be a great joy to work with and has been a great asset to our organization.”
