Third Grade Iditarod Day and Musher Visit

During the winter semester, Tower Hill third graders embarked on a unit of study that emphasized strength, courage, perseverance and teamwork: Alaska’s Iditarod or The Last Great Race, as it is known.
Students researched Alaska and the history of the race, then selected a musher to track and follow as the 2013 Iditarod race unfolded over 1,049 miles of Alaskan wilderness.

Throughout the race, which takes from nine to sometimes over 30 days, students were able to follow their musher’s daily progress, analyze weather conditions and receive updates on the health of each dogsled team.

At the conclusion of the race, students celebrated with the second annual Iditarod Day at Tower Hill, inviting the entire school community to visit third grade to view research projects, art displays and a photo gallery prepared by each homeroom.

As students returned from spring break, the learning continued with a visit from musher and dog trainer Christopher Bannister of Xtreme Weather Kennels. Mr. Bannister, with his team of Siberian huskies, provided both classroom presentations and outdoor demonstrations of dogsled racing.
