Integrating Mathematics and the Arts

Geometry students proved a strong correlation between geometry and art through string art design projects.
There is a strong connection and history between geometry and art. During the second quarter, Geometry students in Mrs. Tatasciore’s and Mrs. Jordan’s classes got to explore this integrated topic. String Art is an art form that has been around since the 1800s. Simply by using multiple straight lines of string, curves can be created to make shapes or more complex designs. Some students used Geometer’s Sketchpad software to create their designs, while others used more traditional techniques such as rulers, compasses, protractors and/or graph paper. After creating their designs on paper, students then had to produce three-dimensional versions of their project. They used a variety of materials, such as wood, nails, string, and foam board to make their design come to life. Students were able to apply many of the geometric concepts learned throughout the semester in a written description of their project and presented the final product to the class.
