Jefferson Awards Announced

The Jefferson Award winners are Rachel Minkovitz, Taylor Reese and Zach Nitsche for November, December and January, respectively. Together, the three students have contributed over 500 hours to serving the community.
November winner: Rachel Minkovitz

November’s Jefferson Award Winner, Rachel Minkovitz, has contributed over 140 hours of service with two organizations. She served 61 hours at St. Michael’s School and Nursery where she worked with primarily kindergarten, first and second grade students. She read, helped with crafts and recess and many other duties. St. Michael's hopes that she will come back to visit. She also served 85 hours as a supervisor at the Delaware Art Museum’s Summer Art Camp. She was responsible for overseeing art projects and monitoring campers and was a part of their Sunday Studio Series. The Art museum staff says she was a lead volunteer, and they look forward to seeing her in the future.

December winner: Taylor Reese

Our December Jefferson Award winner has donated numerous hours and has been affiliated with Special Olympics for over seven years. Most recently she contributed 92 hours by helping to facilitate, schedule and organize tennis matches for Special Olympic athletes. She has baked cookies, kept score, practiced with the athletes, emptied trash cans, hauled boxes. Her supervisor commented, “She pretty much does it all, and she learned the names of of all 53 athletes. She clearly has a passion for this, and we are better for having her involved.” Taylor shared, ”It was an incredible experience I wouldn’t trade for anything."

January winner: Zach Nitsche

Zach has contributed over 100 hours of service with First Tee an organization that teaches young children to golf.  He has collaborated with his peers and helped to organize and co-lead our Blue-Gold Fashion Show Fundrasier that brought in over $5,500. He is currently the co-president of our Jefferson Awards/Students in Action program and has been an exemplary leader in organizing, attending and guiding his peers throughout many events. As co-president, he helped organize, orchestrate and participate in a dodge ball tournament that raised over $600 to buy turkeys that he personally helped deliver to senior citizens in Wilmington. He is very good at handling all the small details and unforeseen problems that arise when putting on large events. He handles them with grace, logic and inevitably the outcome is a success. He’s the first one to arrive, and the last one to leave. He leads with charisma, a sense of purpose, a sense of humor and respect for all his peers and teachers.
