Hillers Settle Down, Rally Past CR
Murphy nets four goals as team recovers from early penalties, deficit.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS LACROSSE: TOWER HILL 9, CAESAR RODNEY 7
The Hillers were trailing Caesar Rodney by three goals early in the second half, and were a man down after a series of penalties. But Sam Murphy supplied the offense, Beau Isken supplied the saves and Tower Hill rallied for a 9-7 road victory on Tuesday night.
“We demonstrated some bad sportsmanship and some bad character in the first half,” Hillers coach Brad du Pont said. “Surprisingly, we were still in the game. I think once we settled down and played within ourselves, with fundamentals, we crept back in it.”
Murphy finished with four goals and an assist as fifth-ranked Tower Hill (7-0) remained unbeaten. The fourth-ranked Riders let a 6-3 lead slip away and fell to 7-2.
The Riders had the best of it early, as A.J. Hayward scored and assisted on goals by Hunter Schaeffer and David Schmidt for a 3-0 lead with 11:46 left in the second quarter.
Murphy scored twice and Grier Wakefield bounced in a shot as the Hillers pulled within 5-3 at halftime. Hayward assisted on Thomas Aloe’s goal to push CR’s lead back to three with 9:13 left in the third quarter, but the Riders couldn’t capitalize on an extra man opportunity and Tower Hill seized the momentum.
Murphy assisted on Ben Manning’s goal, then pumped in two more as the Hillers tied it at 6 with 2:09 left in the third quarter.
“Murphy led it by winning the faceoffs, scoring four goals and being the emotional leader,” du Pont said. “I think the kids followed him.”
Tower Hill kept rolling in the fourth, as Andrew Pettit scored on an inside move for the Hillers’ first lead of the game with 8:54 left. Wakefield slipped in from behind for a goal at the 5:27 mark, and Pettit flipped in a shot from behind his head to make it 9-6 with 3:36 to go.
Meanwhile, Isken kept the Riders off the board for more than 19 minutes in the second half, finishing with seven saves.
“They shoot the ball really hard,” du Pont said of CR. “I didn’t know if we had enough fingers to put in the dike to stop them. But our goalie played really well, and that made a huge difference. There were one or two saves where if he didn’t make them, it would have been over for us.”
Schaeffer scored three goals for the Riders, while Hayward finished with two goals and four assists.
