English Department Chair Recognized for Poetry

This year, English Department chair Leslie Sysko has published her poems in a few notable places. Her poem "Checkout" currently appears in Amazon’s Day One, a new literary journal which features one poem and one short story a week. Sysko was also published in Best New Poets 2013. Her poem “Just Try” was selected by a guest editor. Finally, the state poetry calendar for Texas features one of Sysko’s poems, even though she has no personal connection to the Lone Star state.

Sysko was invited to her alma mater, Lafayette College, to give a reading for the 20th anniversary of the H. MacKnight Black Poetry Prize, an honor she won as a senior at Lafayette. Poets and fellow alums Ross Gay, Yolanda Wisher, and Leslieann Hobayan read their poems and viewed an exhibit of Lafayette poet visitors and alums in which their work is included.
