Annie Zeberkiewicz Awarded Coach of the Year for Men’s Cross Country

Annie Zeberkiewicz was named Delaware’s Coach of the Year for men’s cross country at the 2014 N5CTA Cross Country Banquet. She was selected by her fellow coaches throughout the state for the honor, marking the first time a Hiller received the award for boys’ cross country in at least 30 years.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said. “I will remember this year for the rest of my life, because of the kids.”

The boys’ team finished second in the DIAA Division II Championships in November, with two runners placing in the top 10. Zeberkiewicz coaches both the boys’ and girls’ teams, which have grown in numbers in recent years under her leadership.

She joined Tower Hill in the fall of 2008 as an assistant coach and has since taken on head coach duties for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. This year she and assistant coach Tom Hoch initiated a 5-day training program in Vermont, with the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams climbing mountains together and benefitting from running at a higher elevation.

“It was so worth it,” she said. “I hope it will become a Tower Hill tradition.”

The Middle School English teacher ran cross country herself in high school and walked onto the University of Delaware’s team. She continues to run competitively, having completed the Philadelphia Marathon in November.

“She practices what she preaches,” said Tower Hill Athletic Director Jack Holloway. “She is an excellent role model for our kids, and she has done a tremendous job.”

Also attending the N5CTA banquet were students Raley Abramczyk and Brendan Harris, who received awards for All Conference, All County and All State along with MVP for the girls’ and the boys’ teams.

Zeberkiewicz said that she sees every member of the team contributing to this year’s success, with every runner behind them pushing teammates a bit harder. The leadership of seniors in particular was inspiring this season, she said.

“I try to show them that running is a lifelong sport,” she said. “And it’s a sport for every level.”
