Students Attend the Middle School Diversity Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, March 10, Heidi Chu, Ben du Pont, Macklin Fishman, Sarah Greenberg, Delina Irgau, Kirit Minhas, Maddie Sachs and Sara Stoupa represented Tower Hill at the Student Leadership Conference at Haverford School. They are now planning on making a presentation to the Middle School about what they learned that day. Below, three of our representatives talk about their experience.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE DIVERSE?
by Macklin Fishman, Delina Irgau and Maddie Sachs

What does it mean to be diverse? Is it how you look or where you came from? Is it what you believe? The eight of us wanted to find out. So we submitted paragraphs to Señora Leader and Mrs. Houston about why we wanted to go, and on March 10 we attended the Middle School Diversity Leadership Conference held at the Haverford School, just north of Philadelphia. Schools from Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and even New York came together to discuss diversity and how it affects all of us as individuals and as a community. We watched an incredible poem called “Somewhere in America.” Dr. Michael Fowlin put on an amazing performance about stereotypes, and we split into small groups with people from other schools to discuss our opinions and share our personal experiences regarding diversity. It was a beneficial and educational field trip that opened our eyes to how different we really are, but also how alike. All of us who attended the conference would highly encourage rising seventh- and eighth graders to go because it was an amazing opportunity for all of us.
