Students Participate in National Jefferson Awards Leadership Conference

Several Tower Hill School students recently attended a national Jefferson Awards leadership conference at the University of Delaware’s Gore Hall organized by Ms. Michelle Fidance and Dr. Stine.

Neha Wadhwa, Emily Yin, Julia Ward, Emerson McCauley, Jade Olurin and Cinderella Tang represented Tower Hill at the event along with our faculty advisor, Ms. Morrow.

The conference facilitators were University of Delaware students majoring in Leadership. At the opening ceremony, we separated into our randomly selected groups for the day. No two THS students were in the same group to ensure that we would meet new people and make new friends. Each group conducted a variety of exercises geared towards helping the conference attendees grow, develop, and enhance our abilities as leaders, group members, and community members. For example, we participated in an exercise to brainstorm and develop, as a team, to create a viable outline to stop a key local, social issue (e.g. environmental issues, poverty, etc).

Separately, conference attendees enjoyed guest speakers, like David Burke and Samuel Beard, talk about their own journeys as leaders.  These speakers emphasized themes like exuding passion, helping others, thinking outside of the box, and taking measured risks.

We completed our conference discussing what we learned and our appreciation for our UD college student hosts, Ms. Fidance, our faculty advisors, and the Jefferson Award organization for the productive and enjoyable day.  We left the conference with an enhanced set of skills that will increase our effectiveness within Tower Hill, in Wilmington, and in the World.
