Penguin Research: Students' Flag Flies in Antarctica

Mrs. Martinez's reading group has been studying penguins!  We first read and learned about similarities of all penguins with a focus on Emperor penguins and Antarctica. We worked with scientists, www.penguinscience.com, who are living at the McMurdo research station in Antarctica where they study penguins and climate changes. We created a flag, which we sent to them and they flew it over the Adelie penguin colony near McMurdo Station! The children also wrote postcards to the scientists. The scientists will be sending these postcards back to the children.

The children then each studied one penguin species (did you know there are 17 different species!).  They took notes and each created a Popplet on their special penguin.  They presented their findings to the whole 2nd Grade.
