Hosting International Students

Dear Tower Hill families,
As we consider collaboration and a truly global education for our students, there is no better place to start than ancient Roman culture! This week our eighth-grade students participated in Latin Day, a four-school collaboration between Tatnall, Sanford, Wilmington Friends and Tower Hill. We can all take pride in knowing that Tower Hill won the chariot race!
This week we also welcome our exchange students from Lycée St. Just in Lyon, France; they will be visiting all three divisions of Tower Hill. The group is touring the Hagley and Delaware Art museums, visiting Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., sailing the Kalmar Nyckel and enjoying the company of our students and host families as they sharpen their English language skills. Recently Tower Hill also opened our doors to exchange students from Australia for two weeks in a new partnership with St. Catherine’s School outside of Melbourne, and we will begin a program hosting Guatemalan students this fall. These experiences provide our students with new perspectives and broaden their global outlook. Coincidentally, the Speers family will be hosting two students this weekend — one from Kabul, Afghanistan, and one from Hamburg, Germany. These students are visiting with our daughter during their long spring weekend; we have much in common and so much to continue to learn.

Our Tower Hill host families who open their hearts and their homes to our international students will tell you firsthand what a terrific experience this can be. We can all be grateful for these families, as they are part of what it takes to run a robust global program. Next year we are looking for host families for students from China, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Guatemala. Please contact our Director of Global Initiatives Eduardo Silva at esilva@towerhill.org if you are interested in learning more. He will soon be sharing details of an exciting new initiative for our Upper School students at Tower Hill: the Tower Hill Global Scholars Certificate Program, whereby Upper School students can delve more deeply into their interest with a global focus (see more below).
What a stretch of beautiful weather we have had. It is so much fun to feel the energy that your children bring to campus, each and every day! A Happy Passover to our Jewish students and families.
