I teach English 9 (one section), English 10 (two sections), and three English electives, "Philosophers, Explorers, and Mad Captains: Literature of the Sea," "Grit Lit: The Working Class World in American Literature," and "Labyrinths: Magic Realism and Fantasy in World Literature."
How long have you been at Tower Hill?
This is my fourth year at Tower Hill.
Briefly describe your own education.
I attended a private school much like Tower Hill School, Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have a B.A. in American History from Brown University, and I have an M.A. in English from Villanova University, where I did my thesis work on magic realism in American literature.
Why do you do what you do? What are you passionate about at work?
I am inspired by my work to be the best teacher possible. I want my students to be strong writers and readers. I want them to think critically and creatively. I want them to be confident speakers. I want them to develop their own voice. I want them to have empathy for others. And I am regularly humbled and inspired by my colleagues — intelligent, committed, and kind teachers and leaders who are not just experts in their fields, but good people. I love the Tower Hill community and feel blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of it — to discuss literature, to mentor young people, and to share my passions with willing listeners.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my wife, Bettina, and my five-month-old daughter, Josephine. I also enjoy playing guitar and watching sports, especially ice hockey.
