Tower Hill's Jefferson Awards Program to Represent Delaware in D.C.

The Jefferson Awards Students in Action (SIA) program selected Tower Hill as the Delaware Recipient For Outstanding Service By a High School to represent the State of Delaware at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony and Gala Event in Washington, D.C. in June. Tower Hill was selected at the 2017 Regional Competition held on April 8, chosen by a panel of local judges for leadership, engagement and impact around service in school and for philanthropic contribution to the community.

During the 2016-2017 school year, the vision of the Tower Hill team was to provide a variety of service opportunities for the school in the hope of engaging a larger portion of the student body, creating a service-oriented culture, and to affect change in the greater community. In addition, the school's goal was to get as many community members involved with their events so they used both social media and school communications to accomplish this. They hosted and formed partnerships to complete many community service projects in support of local and global organizations with both monetary and in-kind support.

Just a few of their accomplishments include raising over $500 at the annual Hunger Games tournament to purchase turkeys for the Nor Enterprises Turkey Drive at Thanksgiving, raising $1,200 at the Hoops For Habitat basketball game to benefit Habitat For Humanity, and leading their school in an MLK Day of Service that benefitted multiple local organizations like the Emmanuel Dining Hall, Sojourners Place and the Delaware Human Society. Through communication, collaboration and teamwork, the club's efforts this year had a financial impact of over $108,000 to the community.

The Jefferson Awards Students in Action is currently operating in 400 high schools nationwide and in 13 regions: Boston, Chicago, Delaware, Central Florida, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Jersey, New York, Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Bay Area, South Carolina and Toledo. The Jefferson Awards will select one outstanding high school as the national honoree. Each regional high school, along with the national honoree, will be showcased as part of the National Jefferson Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on June 28-30.
