Afghanistan: An Outsider’s View from Inside

Wendy Summer, the founder of ZAANHA and ZAANHA Fund, spoke to the Upper School on Tuesday about her experiences traveling to Afghanistan. In April 2006, Wendy traveled to Afghanistan for the first time to mentor women entrepreneurs and fell in love with the country and its people. During that trip, she decided to start ZAANHA — which means “women” in the Dari language — with the mission of sending illiterate Afghan children to school. ZAANHA’s programs are funded by the sales of scarves and shawls made primarily by master craftspeople in Nepal and India. Wendy’s stories and insights presented a different picture than what one usually hears about Afghanistan, and the presentation gave students reasons to care about a culture they may have thought differently about before.
