Ten Reasons to Remember One Big Year - Tower Hill's Epic 2OT Lacrosse Win Tops All

In June The News Journal published an article about high school athletics in Delaware entitled Ten Reasons to Remember One Big Year. Two reasons -- # 1 and # 10 -- cited Tower Hill programs. Following are exerpts from the article. 

1. Tower Hill's stunning rally

 Winning a state championship is one thing. Winning it in double overtime, after tying the game with 12 seconds left in regulation, earns the top moment of the high school sports year – Tower Hill’s 5-4 win in double overtime against Salesianum in the boys lacrosse state championship.

Michael Pettit had three goals, including one on an assist from Chas Robino with 3:05 left in the second four-minute, sudden death overtime period to make Tower Hill the champ. Salesianum led 4-2 until Robino scored with 1:38 left in regulation to make it a one-goal game, and Jake Graham scored with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie it.

It was 1-1 at halftime. Salesianum led 4-1 through three quarters, but did not score in the final 18:47.

“We knew we could do it,” said Pettit, a sophomore. “We had two quick goals [at the end of regulation] and we knew it was ours.”

10. The new soccer champs

This spring, Tower Hill won its first girls soccer state title. The Hillers beat Caesar Rodney 1-0 on Grace Firestone’s goal on a free kick from 25 yards in the 27th minute. Like the Caravel boys in their final, the Tower Hill win was backed up by effective midfield and defensive play, including lone senior Jordan Bills and sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey O’Donnell.
