Maddy Silverman Defends DWGA Championship
Maddy Silverman '12 won the Delaware Women's Golf Association Junior Girls Championship at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club at Rising Sun. Maddy will continue her golf career at Boston University this fall.

RISING SUN, MD. — After Delaware’s top junior golfers took two trips around the course, it was easy to declare a winner. It was the golf course itself – Chesapeake Bay Golf Club at Rising Sun.
Helped by a stiff breeze, the 6,244-yard, par-71 layout battered the field with its fast greens and devilish hole locations. It looked more like the U.S. Open than the Delaware State Golf Association’s Junior Boys Championship.
But the lowest score still wins, no matter how high that score may be. On Wednesday, recent Caravel graduate Tyler Cross emerged as the winner at 154, 12-over par for 36 holes.
“I just kept it in play and putted well,” Cross said. “You’re not going to go out there and shoot something in the 60s when you’ve got crazy pin locations and the wind is swirling.
“I felt like I played great both days, and I just couldn’t believe the numbers I was shooting,” Cross added. “I thought the scores would be much better than this.”
So did the rest of the field. But Cross opened with a 78 on Tuesday, then came in with a 76 Wednesday. The Bear resident, who will play on the golf team at the University of Delaware this fall, edged Jerome Mangubat of Magnolia (77-78–155) by one shot. Michael Chanaud of Gambrills, Md., followed an 82 by tying the tournament’s low round with a 74 to rally for third.
“I just kind of slugged it out, tried to make pars, because there weren’t a whole lot of birdies to be made,” Cross said. “It was kind of like U.S. Open golf. That’s what I thought the whole time.”
Maddy Silverman of Greenville defended her title in the Delaware Women’s Golf Association Junior Girls Championship, matching Cross at 78-76–154 to win by four strokes.
“The driver was a little rough today, but my irons really helped me out a lot,” said Silverman, a recent Tower Hill graduate who will continue her golf career at Boston University.
The girls tournament only had eight entries, but Silverman’s victory wasn’t easy. Samantha Leite of Camden and Amanda Ploener of Chadds Ford, Pa., each shot 80-78 and tied for second at 158.
“It was competitive,” Silverman said. “The other girls played really well.”
In addition to the overall title, the boys tournament also declared winners for each age. The winners were Chanaud (18-year-olds), Cross (17), Mangubat (16), Ryan Rucinski (15), Davis Mitchell (14) and Austin Barbin (13-under).
