Dreams Come True for Young Artists

Congratulations to four Middle School students--Kyle Bosse, Alexandra Caimi, Julia Ward and Daisy Zimmerman--who were chosen to display their artwork at the Delaware Art Museum as part of the 12 x 12 Exhibition. The exhibit celebrates the museum's centennial and highlights the work of young artists living in Delaware.

Works will be on display in the museum from October 20, 2012 through January 13, 2013. There is also a 12 x 12 Exhibition Open House on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. The event is free. http://www.delart.org/exhibitions/12x12.html

Read their stories below on what inspired their artwork, the process and materials for creating their pieces and how they feel about having their work on display at the Delaware Art Museum.

Over the summer I had been working on drawing parts of the face, using a book that gives step-by-step instructions on how to make your drawings look real. This was a great opportunity to put it all together and make a drawing that would actually go on display at an art museum.
Starting in the center of the face, I began with the nose and worked my way out.  I continued with the eyes, then mouth, and shaded these parts. I then made the outline of the face and the hair, finishing with the ears. Blending it was the step that was the hardest, most time-consuming, and most nerve-wracking. It all paid off and the face looked great. The final step was drawing and shading the clothes, and making small adjustments here and there. I used a graphite artist pencil and my old sketch pad.  For shading I used a tortillion, and a kneaded eraser.
I am proud of myself for spending a good amount of time and effort on one of my drawings. It took me over a week to create the picture, and I worked very hard on it. This picture stands out as my first large achievement in art.

I was inspired to create this piece, because I feel that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My work had to be something special, that I've practiced drawing a lot, and had a unique meaning to me. The fish, Reginald as I like to call him, was the perfect candidate for my choice, because he is something I constantly incorporate into my drawings. They could be scribbles on a napkin, illustrations on a birthday card, or (in this case) a piece to put in a museum.
Using pencil, I sketched out my design first. After making sure that I had it as well planned out as it was going to get, I started to add the details. Then I added the color, with colored pencils. Finally I added glitter to the fish and to the waves.
Many famous artists don't get their best pieces into museums until after they've died. Lot's of little kids grow up hearing how beautiful their artwork is and dream of it hanging proudly on the wall. Very few of them actually make it that far. In eighth grade, I had this incredible opportunity that I just had to take. I feel very proud, that when that exhibit opens, I can walk in and say, "Hey look! There's Reginald!"

In March we got a puppy named Mojo. He is a Bernese Mountain dog and is nine months old, but weighs 100 pounds. He is very energetic, curious, and always in good spirits. I wanted to paint a picture of Mojo because I had never painted a dog before, and I thought it would be neat to try it. Also I thought Mojo deserved to have a portrait of himself because he is one handsome dog. Before I started painting I drew a rough sketch on a separate piece of paper. I wanted to get a feel for how his head and body were shaped. Then on a canvas I drew the outline of Mojo, but not the details. I used a paint called gouache. It is one of my favorite paints to use. Gouache has the same thickness as water color, but it looks like oil paint when it dries. I painted Mojo and the background with gouache. I wanted the background to have lots of color and to be cheerful to show Mojo’s personality. Then I added some glitter paint to make the background shimmer. I think having my artwork being displayed at the Delaware Art Museum is a great experience. I have always loved painting and drawing, and having to do it for an art show is a dream come true. I hope I have more great opportunities to show my artwork!

I have just started leasing a new horse named Buster, and I love him more than anything! He's so perfect! I also love painting, so I thought I would paint him. I used acrylic paints for this piece, several different types of brushes, and a lot of inspiration. I think it is amazing that I can have some of my artwork in an exhibit! It is what I have wanted for awhile, so this was an amazing opportunity!
