Hillers Recognized for Outstanding Fall Athletic Seasons

The fall of 2015 was a great season for Tower Hill athletics. All five teams reached the DIAA State Tournament level of play, and field hockey, football and soccer all won DISC Championships.

 

Cross country competed strongly this year and Hudson Pepper placed 5th in the DIAA States with his best time of the year.

 

Volleyball had a 10-5 record and qualified for the state tournament. The team defeated Newark Charter in the first round before falling to Ursuline in the quarterfinals.

 

Field hockey had an excellent 13-2 regular season and won the DISC Championship. After defeating Sanford at home in the first round of the tournament, the girls knocked off #4-seeded Polytech High School 3-2 to advanced to the semi-finals. Tower Hill started the semi-final game out on top of three-time defending state champions Cape Henlopen, but couldn’t hold on as they fell 2-1.

 

Soccer continued their winning ways this year with an outstanding 11-1-3 mark and another DISC Conference Championship. An overtime win against St. Georges propelled them into the state semi-finals against the defending state champions Caravel. The Hillers scored first, but not often enough, and fell to the Buccaneers 4-2.

 

Football had a remarkable 7-2 campaign that ended with an amazing second half comeback (down 14-0) over archrival Friends. The Hillers score with 50 seconds left in the game and went for 2 points after the touchdown to nail down the 15-14 victory. This won the DISC Championship for the team and prevented Friends from having the only unbeaten season in the state. The team fell in the playoffs to Howard High, who went on to win the Division II title.

 

“I continually marvel at how our small school has been able to maintain its place among the elite programs of Delaware,” Athletic Director Jack Holloway said. “It was an outstanding fall season, and a tribute to our athletes who continue to add to our proud tradition of championship play.”
