A Global Focus

This week I had the privilege of speaking at the Rotary Club of Wilmington, an active group of service-minded individuals who share a commitment to our city. This year the club’s theme is “Wilmington: A World-Class City,” and I was honored to be able to talk about Tower Hill’s goal to be a school of Wilmington and the world.

 

Conversations around campus have been inspiring, with faculty, staff, trustees, parents and students discussing ways our school has long been involved in the community and opportunities to further engage locally and globally. And we have acted on those discussions. This year we have sent students on a new exchange program with St. Catherine’s School in Australia (and also welcomed their host students to Tower Hill this week); we are now offering Mandarin to our Middle and Upper School students; we have globally focused speakers, such as yesterday’s Middle School Chapel guest Gavin Ford of Africa Inscribed. Yesterday our first-graders brought donations to the Ronald McDonald House and then attended a play downtown at the Grand Opera House. We are exploring a way for our squash team, which practices at the Riverfront, to volunteer with underserved children just learning the game, with a new initiative called First State Squash.

 

These are but a few examples, and we can be very proud of the agility and conviction this community has shown towards our important goal to be a school of Wilmington and the world. I look forward to deepening our partnerships in Wilmington, to mentoring our students as engaged citizens, and to continually strengthening Tower Hill’s public purpose.
