Forum Series

Dear parents,

I hope you all were able to enjoy our Homecoming festivities last weekend — it was a wonderful gathering of Hillers through the decades! The Class of 1938’s Irénée du Pont Jr. joined us for Founders’ Day and brought his 1936 Oldsmobile to DeGroat Field for a bit of Tower Hill history. His father was one of the school’s founders, so it was especially appropriate to welcome him to campus for all the green-and-white spirit and the presentation of the Founders’ Achievement Award. All of our athletic teams won on Friday and Saturday, and the Reunion was a big success as we fêted former trustee Linda Boyden with a Founders’ Achievement Award as well and toasted the recently retired Harry Baetjer. Thank you to all who celebrated with us.

On Monday, we heard from U.S. Senator and Tower Hill alumnus Chris Coons ‘81 as our first Forum Lecture Series speaker of the school year. This year marks the 20th year of the Tower Hill Forum, and our theme is The Constitutional Underpinnings of American Government. As part of our Forum SeriesUpper School students will hear from Washington Post columnist George Will on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7p.m. Parents and community members may attend any of our Forum lectures; you can find the schedule here.

The Forum Series is but one example of Tower Hill’s commitment to ensure our students gain multiple perspectives about our community, country and the world. Teachers across divisions take advantage of the wider Tower Hill and Wilmington community by ensuring we continuously expose our students to thoughtful and interesting speakers and guests. As we do so in age-appropriate ways, our teachers facilitate conversation, questions and respectful dialogue so that our students learn to think critically and form their own opinions.

Have a good weekend,
Bessie
