Head's Council

Dear parents,

Yesterday evening, Upper School students gathered at Hayward House for our regular Head's Council meeting. This group of students applied to Head’s Council because they want to learn more about the day-to-day operations of Tower Hill School, from facilities and finance to curriculum and strategic planning. It is a privilege for me to hear their passion, questions and ideas; they care about their educational experience and the Tower Hill community. Indeed, one day they may well be headed toward leadership roles in business, finance or education.

These students now understand more about independent school philanthropy, as we have discussed what an Annual Fund is. At first they were surprised when I told them that, in essence, all families in independent schools receive a discount on tuition, as tuition alone does not cover the true cost per student. The gap between tuition revenue and operating expenses is covered in part by the generosity of donors to the Annual Fund. Without these contributions, school programs and offerings — which make Tower Hill exceptional and unique — would surely be impacted.

We are extremely grateful to all who have supported the THS Annual Fund so far this year — parents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, grandparents and friends. This week's 1919 Challenge on Giving Tuesday was a strong show of support, and we know that many more Tower Hill families will contribute during this season of giving. It means a great deal to me, our teachers, trustees and ultimately our students to have robust participation in our Annual Fund. Our Head’s Council students understand this; if I were to let them “encourage” all of us to invest in their Tower Hill, we might experience another earthquake! They are a passionate and competitive group!

With appreciation,

Bessie
