Destiny Smith '20 Accepted into Competitive TASS Program at Cornell

Destiny Smith ‘20 was recently accepted into the competitive Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS) program at Cornell University. Fifty-six high school sophomores were accepted into the program and will participate in one of four challenging six-week college-level seminars on topics related to critical ethnic studies this summer.

Telluride Association is a nonprofit organization that creates and fosters unique educational opportunities for young people based on intellectual inquiry, democratic self-government and meaningful work.

Smith is enrolled in “Shades of Blackness: Exploring Race, Gender and Sexuality in the African Diaspora through Performance, Film, Music and Art,” a course designed to introduce students to global blackness (what it means to live a black identity and experience throughout the world) through forms of cultural production such as history, literature, material culture, theater/performance, music and film.

“I think this will be an interesting class just because you get to see another side of a topic that you learn about in class,” Smith said. “And you do it through watching movies, so it’ll be really fun to watch a movie or listen to music and analyze the music and not only listen to it as a good tune but understand where it comes from.”

Smith said she’s looking forward to learning more about a topic she’s interested in and getting an early sense of what it’s like to be a college student.

“I just wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. It’s something that I’m really interested in and like learning about so I wouldn’t mind spending six weeks at school learning about something I’m actually interested in,” Smith said. “I think I’ll really enjoy my time there because it’s beneficial to me but also fun.”
