DISTINCT Hosts Mindfulness Discussion

On Monday, Nov. 18, DISTINCT (Diversity and Inclusion at Tower Hill) hosted a morning coffee discussion on mindfulness and social justice. Nearly 40 parents attended this event, which was facilitated by Middle School faculty members Andrea Sarko (a certified mindfulness teacher) and Carmen Martinez. Both faculty members are also Tower Hill Equity and Inclusion Coordinators working with Director of Social Justice Dyann Connor.

Mindfulness breathing exercises focus on self-control and encourage slowing down, reducing stress, listening better and participating meaningfully, especially in preparation for difficult tasks or conversations. Participants expressed interest in learning more about how age appropriate mindfulness practices can further help students, in particular during the teenage years when students face a variety of competing pressures and choices, as well as during the elementary years when children’s habits and ability to focus are developing.
