Tower Hill Mourns the death of Ernie Savage,

Ernie Savage served many roles at Tower Hill  from 1956 to 1986, including  Assistant Headmaster, Chairman of the History Department, Dean of Students, and coach. Click to read his obituary from The News Journal

Ernest Chauncey Savage, Jr., age 83, of Crosslands Communities, son of Ernest C. Savage and Jane Bell Yeatman Savage, died on October 26, 2007

He attended Germantown Friends School before graduating from the Pomfret School, Pomfret, CT in 1942. He went to Princeton University in June 1942 and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1943-46, first in the A.S.P.T. at Auburn University, Alabama, and then in the 106th Infantry Division from 1944-46 in the Battle of the Bulge. He started teaching at the St. Louis Country Day School, St. Louis, MO, in 1948 where he taught history and social studies and coached the varsity soccer and baseball teams. He earned an M.A. in U.S. History at Harvard University, 1951-52, and then taught and coached at Millbrook School, Millbrook, NY, from 1952-56 before coming to Tower Hill School in Wilmington, DE, as Head of the History department in 1956. He was Upper School Dean of Students from 1958-62, Assistant Headmaster 1962-85, and varsity baseball coach 1957-65. He retired in 1986. At Christ Church Christiana Hundred, he served on the vestry and as Keyman and President of the West Side Larger Parish. He was a Board member of Children's Home, Claymont, DE, Republican Committeeman, and "birddog" scout for the Detroit Tigers baseball club. He enjoyed golf at Biderman Golf Club and at the Ausable Club in the Adirondacks and tennis and paddle tennis at Vicmead Hunt Club. His hobbies also included reading and bridge, and he was a devoted follower of the Phillies and the other Philadelphia sports teams. He traces his lineage directly back to Thomas Savage who arrived in Jamestown, VA in early 1608, making his family's the longest line directly through the male side in the United States today. He married Sarah Trowbridge on June 28, 1952, and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last year.

Sarah died in February of this year. He is survived by their 4 children, daughter Marion Lind Savage Recht, her husband, David and their 2 children of Norfolk, MA; Jane Savage Riley, her husband, Steven and their 3 children of Moorestown, NJ; Margaret Laird Savage of Ewing, NJ; and a son Thomas Littleton Savage, his wife, Patricia and their 3 children also of Moorestown, NJ. In addition he is survived by 2 sisters, Jane Savage Roberts of Newtown Square, PA, and Anne Savage Barnum of Greenwich, CT.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday November 3, 2007, at the Auditorium of Tower Hill School 2813 West 17th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806. The burial will be held privately in Princeton, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tower Hill School at the above address.
