Silver Eagles cut Hillers' first playoff trip short

GLASGOW -- Hodgson Vo-Tech rushed for 266 yards and passed for 111 more on the way to a 40-0 victory over Tower Hill in a Division II first- round game of the Delaware High School Football Tournament on Saturday at Hodgson.

"Our offensive philosophy was to keep the ball moving and let's keep the chains moving," Hodgson coach Frank Moffett said. "And let's eat up the clock."

Hodgson advances to play at second-seeded Delmar next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The third-seeded Silver Eagles (11-0) got off to a quick start, as Jamaal Jackson scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 5-yard run with 5:36 left in the first quarter.

Nick Tiberi gave the Silver Eagles a 12-0 lead with a 1-yard run midway through the second quarter, completing an 18-play, 90-yard drive that took 6:54 off the clock.

Jackson followed with his second 5-yard scoring run to give Hodgson an 18-0 lead at halftime. Jackson rushed for 177 yards on 23 carries.

"I give all my thanks to my line because they were making holes that were open for me, and all I had to do is follow my fullbackthrough them," said Jackson, a sophomore.

The sixth-seeded Hillers (9-2) got into scoring range for the only time early in the second half, but were forced to settle for a field-goal attempt. Matthew Hollis' kick was blocked and returned by Blair Menefee for a 74-yard TD to make it 26-0.

The Hillers didn't get the performance they hoped for, but they earned the school's first state football tournament berth and celebrated a share of the Independent Conference title.

"I am extremely proud of the effort the kids put out all year," Tower Hill coach Kevin Waesco said. "We put together a wonderful regular season. ... It's been an honor to continue the proud tradition of Tower Hill football."
