Antonio Puri - October Artist in the Gallery

Antonio Puri was born in Chandigarh, India with a mystical disposition. Puri spent his early years amidst Buddhist monks in the Himalayas where he attended English and International boarding schools. Those early influences became his springboard to combine traditional concepts and modern abstract art. Puri insists that the importance of mystery in art flows from his conviction that the nature of reality itself is ultimately mysterious. With his work, Puri plays with the tension between the geometric and the organic, a means to control the chaos of everyday life. His painting is layered with gestures small and large; with transparent, translucent, opaque, textured and flat areas; mixed media including acrylic pain, varnish, newspaper articles and maps; line and swaths of color and voids; spills and scraped areas and curvilinear marks undulating through the design. Puri has had permanent collections and exhibits in the U.S., South Africa, Bulgaria, Austria, Africa and the Netherlands.
