Hillers ride 6-goal outburst: Robino, Pettit, Luft lead way to final

DOVER -- Cape Henlopen High and Tower Hill had to cancel their regular-season finale on May 14 due to thunderstorms.

So the two programs that had combined to capture six state championships since the inception of the Delaware High School Boys Lacrosse Tournament in 1993 had to wait until this year's tourney began to play for keeps.

It was worth the wait.

The third-seeded Hillers scored six goals over the final 7:11 to break open a close game and put up an eye-popping 12-8 win over No. 2 Cape Henlopen in Wednesday's semifinal at Dover High.

Tower Hill (13-3), which won its only state title in 2005, advances to play defending state champion Salesianum at 1 p.m. Saturday at Caravel.

Juniors Chas Robino and Tyler Luft and sophomore Michael Pettit scored three goals each for the Hillers.

Robino got the ball past Vikings goalkeeper James Cook in the final uprising to help put the game away.

"At the end we just really needed to get it on offense and settle the ball," Robino said. "We knew we could beat their defense and settle positions and just hold it and not let them get the ball."

Tower Hill and Cape (13-3) exchanged the lead five times and the game was tied on five occasions.

The Vikings led 8-6 after Jerome Johnson cut through the defense and scored with 9:45 to play.

But the final nine minutes belonged to Tower Hill.

"I was a little nervous when we were down 8-6, but I felt confident that when we played six-on-six that we could do well," Tower Hill coach Brad duPont said. "... When we controlled the ball, good things happened."

Seniors John Young and Daniel Steele, junior Andrew Scrutchfield and sophomore Johnson scored a pair of goals each for Cape.
