Delaware high school field hockey: DiGate paces Hillers—Win gives Adair 300th of career

MIDDLETOWN -- Kali DiGate had three goals as Tower Hill topped Delmar 4-2 in a Saturday afternoon quarterfinal of the DIAA Field Hockey Tournament at Appoquinimink High, the 300th career win for Hillers coach Robin Adair.

No. 6 seed Delmar (12-4) earned four of its seven penalty corners over the game's first 3:21, but couldn't convert.

DiGate put No. 3 Tower Hill (15-1) ahead 1-0 in the ninth minute, though Sam Johnson tied it for Delmar 2:07 before halftime.

The Hillers scored two goals over the first 3:30 of the second half, breaking the tie when Christina Freibott converted a penalty stroke, and DiGate giving the Hillers a 3-1 lead.

DiGate scored after Delmar cleared one of Tower Hill's eight corners, as the Hillers stayed on the attack.

"We kept it in the circle and we really started banging the goalie as hard as we could, and we were all aiming for the corners [of the cage]," DiGate said.

DiGate made it 4-1 with 11:08 left in the game, with Delmar's Danielle Bradley scoring with 1:40 left in the game.

"We had a little let-up, and Delmar took full advantage," Adair said about Delmar tying the game late in the first half. "I was impressed with them. They were fast, they were aggressive, they were a good team.

Adair, a graduate of Cape Henlopen High and Salisbury University, has been the Hillers' head coach since 1994. She is 300-19-12 (.924) with 14 trips to the state final, and 10 state titles.

"She's an awesome coach," DiGate said, "and we had all been happy that we could have been the team that got her 300th win."

Adair said her success stems from "kids who love the game and give me everything they have, and they're the ones who are winning out there."
